A. When we look back to September of 2012 and our first So Long to Leukemia Golf Outing, it was a fundraiser on a mission — and we had no idea where this road might take us.

It was fitting that we hosted the inaugural event at Lake Arrowhead in Nekoosa, Wisconsin on one of Dave Miller’s favorite golf courses where he lived and played for years.

Dave once had a hole-in-one on the third hole on the Lakes Course there. In fact, he was on the links at Lake Arrowhead on a Wednesday and became short of breath. A trip to the hospital and tests revealed a diagnosis of Acute Myeloid Leukemia. By the following Monday, our husband, dad, brother, grandfather and friend was gone.

That first year in 2012, 40 some golfers showed up for the outing. We raised a little more than $7,500 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) of Wisconsin. So Long to Leukemia may have started small, but our dreams were big. Now, we close Ironwood Golf Course with 190 golfers participating. Our fundraising efforts to date are more than $90,000, and we hope to raise $30,000 in this year’s outing.

“So long” was Dave’s trademark whenever we said good-bye. Thus it’s become our mantra for the outing and to help beat blood cancer by raising money to pay for medical research, patient and family support programs and more. All of it stays right here, helping patients and their families in Wisconsin.

Through efforts like our charity, you help us maintain the hope that we can one day truly say, “So Long to Leukemia.”
